A Balinese upacara nganten (wedding ceremony) always take place in the houshold compound and sanggah or pemerajan (family temple), which is decorated for the festive occasion with arches of young palm leaves (background). Several activities are shown here like a traditional narrative. Two youths pound pork into a paste with spices to make sate (grilled meat on skewers) for offerings and feeding guests (left). More banten (offerings) are placed in a pavilion (right). A pemangku (temple priest) prepares tirtha (holy water) for the ceremony (center). The bride and groom, in elaborate outfits, are ritually purified with offerings, including a large caru (demon appeasement) for the entire household (foreground).

This more recent Young Artists style painting is highly decorative and more colorful than those created from the early 1960s to 1970s. The emphasis is on the rhythms of repeated forms : farmers in rows facing alternate directions, similiar coconut trees with white birds amidest the fronds, and women carrying bundles of rice or bowls of offerings on their heads. The composition is symmetrical and directed towards the upper center of the painting where a small hut is located. While the immediate impression is what the Balinese call rame (busy, full activities, crowded), the elements are rather stereotypical and lack any sense of artistic uniqueness.

Processions are a normal feature of almost every Balinese ceremony. Gilded tedung agung (large parasols), long streaming umbul-umbul (banners), loud gamelan (percussion ensemble) music, and colorful banten (offerings) are carried by whorshippers while they escort sacred figures of the deities from one temple to another, or to the seacoast, river, or holy spring for purification rites. Pratima (holy images) and other artifacts are placed in jampana(small houselike structures) carried on the shoulders of men. In this lively work heavenly nymphs hover in the sky. The faceless figures appear in the works of several Young Artists.Colors in this painting appear more intense due to the flat, black background.

Some typical Balinese household activities are seen in a small compound set amidst colorful trees and fields. Bundles of indigenous rice are taken down from a granary, while woman pound and winow more rice for daily meals (lower left). In one pavilion a smith works on some metal tools. The furnace is kept hot by pumping twin bellows. Youths play with their fighting cocks. Farmers in the distant fields are the same size as those in the foreground, a typical feature of the Young Artists style of naive genre painting, in addition to the bright colors and dark outlines.
